Even in the holistic health world sometimes it's easy to focus on active, tangible remedies---take this tincture, do a cleanse, rub this essential oil on you. There is certainly a place for using physical preparations and taking an active role in our health. I don't intend to cut that sort of thing down. There is, however, also a place for a more receptive sort of healing. A healing which can only come when we make that quiet, still place for it. I find healing in my favorite elder tree not only from the berries in elixir, the flowers in tea or the leaves in salve but also when I simply sit beneath it and quiet my mind and relax my body. I find healing in plant preparations but the past few days I found the most healing in making plant art---the rough little mandala in the photo above. As a society we value the quick, the tangible remedy and then we want to hurry on with our lives. But sometimes the best medicine is a nap, making art or music or a hug from a friend. Even when we decide it's time to take something tangible, it's good to stop and really connect with whatever preparation we're taking rather than downing it quickly or even frantically rushing from remedy to remedy in hopes of randomly hitting something useful. Today I'm making space for healing in my life and I hope you will too.
As a community herbalist I empower people to use herbs to care for their health and inspire them to use herbs for delight and nourishment. I have been using herbs for my health and my family's health for almost 20 years.
